Jefferson designed the two of these octagonal architectural gems to complement the octagonal villa at his Bedford County working farm. The necessaries – also known as privies – feature Jefferson’s signature lunette windows, chestnut shingles painted red, and lead domes. The necessaries are integral elements of Jefferson’s efforts to meld architectural and landscape features at his retreat. They flank the house and are American versions of the garden temples found in European gardens of Jefferson’s time.

Thomas Jefferson capped off a lifelong goal of creating a retreat with the design and construction of his only octagonal building at a 4,812-acre plantation he owned 90 miles southwest of Monticello. Building began in 1806 when Jefferson was 63 and still president. After retiring in 1809, Jefferson visited Poplar Forest several times each year.
