Huzzah, my valiant countrymen! Again, I say huzzah! 'tis nobly done, the day's our own! Huzzah, huzzah, huzzah! — from a French and Indian War song
Shouts of "Huzzah!" echoed among the ranks of soldiers in 18th century America. This cheer was used as an expression of encouragement or triumph, and has become identified with the early struggle for freedom.

Michie Tavern has welcomed travelers for more than 200 years. Imagine the coachman's horn announcing your arrival along with other "Strangers," as 18th century visitors were called. You could smell the cooked venison and the tobacco smoke. You could hear the many voices raised in passionate debate over matters both political and personal. Today, the coachman's horn is no longer heard. However, you can still enjoy the same hearty Midday Fare in the Ordinary based on 18th century recipes and offered by servers in period attire. As in the days of yesteryear, a visit to Michie Tavern is still rich in southern culture and hospitality.

Often described as one of our country's foremost architectural masterpieces, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello is a reflection of its creator's ingenuity and breadth of interests. Located on a mountaintop near Charlottesville, Virginia, the house commands a view of the rolling countryside that Jefferson so dearly loved. Monticello was Jefferson's "essay in architecture," and demonstrated his passion for "putting up and pulling down." Beginning in 1768, and continuing for neary 40 years, Jefferson determined virtually every detail of its design, construction, and remodeling. This cross stitch kit is adapted from an original painting by Linda Boudreaux Montgomery that depicts Monticello through the cycle of the four seasons.

You can always tell a Virginian, but you cannot tell them very much! The anonymous author of this creed has captured the special attitude of being associated with Virginia, by birth, marriage, adoption, or any other means. No one really knows the origin of this composition. Possibly it was inspired by a line from Walt Whitman's poem entitled Longings for Home, published in his 1900 work, Leaves of Grass. "O to be a Virginian, where I grew up!"
