The bluebonnet, Lupinus texensis, is a hardy winter annual that can be found in the early spring along the roads and in the fields of central and southern Texas. Adopted as the official Texas state flower in 1901, the bluebonnet reflects the beauty of the springtime landscape, and makes an excellent project choice for any beginning stitcher.

“Almost every person, from childhood on, has been touched by the untamed beauty of wildflowers.”
Lady Bird Johnson began a lifetime of fascination with wildflowers as a child growing up in rural East Texas. On spring days, she would roam the lanes alone looking for violets or wild roses. As First Lady, she encouraged the appreciation and use of wildflowers as part of her Beautification of America program. This quotation comes from Wildflowers Across America, which she co-authored.
