Highland Counted Cross Stitch Kit James Monroe moved to Highland on November 23, 1799. He and his family kept it as their primary home until 1823. While living here, Monroe served as Governor of Virginia, Special Envoy to France, Minister to Great Britain, Minister to Spain, Secretary of State, and President of the United States. The original main house was destroyed by fire in the mid-19th century. The 1818 presidential guest house still stands on the property. Highland was sold in 1826 to the Bank of the United States, and was privately held until 1974, when it was bequeathed to the College of William & Mary.

Maria, the youngest daughter of James and Elizabeth Monroe, embroidered an exquisite sampler in 1814 at the age of 11. The sampler was discovered and acquired by Highland. The design for this counted cross stitch kit is an adaptation of Maria's original sampler.

The floral design of the Highland Bookmark is based on the needlework of a purse owned by Elizabeth Kortright Monroe, wife of James Monroe. The original purse is currently in the collection of the James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Finished size 10" by 3" on 18 count Charles Craft fabric.
