In 1804, Andrew Jackson purchased a farm which he called the Hermitage. The mansion was built between 1819 and 1821, a simple brick home in the Federal style, a conservative choice for this time. In 1831, major remodeling took place. The library, dining room wings, and a one-story colonnade of ten columns were added. In 1834, a fire destroyed the upper story and damaged the lower rooms. The rebuilding was finished in 1836 and was a strong statement of the fashionable Greek Revival style. The border for the cross stitched design was adapted from the original ashlar blockpatterned wallpaper in the Hermitage side halls, printed in France around 1835. Block or stone pattern papers were considered very appropriate for halls, and this paper is described on the original receipt as "entry" paper. There are few pieces of needlework made by women of the Jackson family in the collections at The Hermitage. All of these fall into the category of fancy work – made primarily to demonstrate needlework skill. Tradition says that Rachel Jackson made a cotton and linen whitework trapunto quilt consisting of flowers, vines, and a central flower-filled urn with the initials "R.J." worked into the design. Trapunto is a type of fancy quilting in which the designs are raised on the surface by stuffing the motifs from the back with batting or soft yarn. This kit is a counted cross stitch adaptation from the floral urn on the trapunto coverlet.

From early 16th century Italy came a quilting technique known as trapunto, known for its characteristic raised surface. The texture of stems and vines was produced by stitching with soft yarn or cording. Leaves and the rounder shapes of fruit, such as cherries and grapes, were stuffed from the back with small amounts of batting. Trapunto first appeared in the United States in the late 1700s. Tradition says that Rachel Jackson made a cotton and linen whitework trapunto quilt with a flower-filled urn as the central design. The initials "R" and "J" seemed to be part of the arrangement of the flower stems. This cross stitch kit is inspired by her trapunto work.

Ten-year-old Emily Tennessee Donelson, niece of President Andrew Jackson, worked this sampler in 1817 on linen fabric. The design in this kit is a counted cross stitch adaptation of her original sampler using modern fabric and thread. The authenticity of Emily's work is retained, including uneven stitches and adjustments in spacing and spelling. For example, when she ran out of space in the second line of the education motto, she creatively changed "inclined" to "inclind" and squeezed up the letters so that everything would fit!
