The original 40,000 acres purchased in 1865 by George Hearst, a wealthy miner, evolved into a 250,000-acre estate by the time it was inherited by his son, William Randolph Hearst in 1919. Hearst and famed San Francisco architect Julia Morgan planned and then built "a little something" on a prominent hilltop of the property. Encompassing 165 rooms in the main house and three guest houses, and surrounded by 127 acres of gardens, terraces, pools, and walkways, Hearst Castle has become one of the world's greatest showplaces.
