On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln during a performance of "Our American Cousin" at Ford's Theatre in Washington, DC. President Lincoln, First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln, and their guests were seated in the President's box when Booth, a well known actor, sneaked in with a derringer and shot the President. Ford's Theatre National Historic Site continues as a living memorial to Lincoln as well as a working contemporary theater.
