The historically documented and restored Saxton McKinley House is home to the First Ladies National Historic Site. It is operated and managed by the National First Ladies' Library in a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service. Formerly the family home of First Lady Ida Saxton McKinley, it was built in two segments: the first in about 1841 and the second in about 1865. The Saxton McKinley House is also the only residence with direct historical ties to President William McKinley. William and Ida McKinley resided together here longer than at any other private residence. The National First Ladies' Library is dedicated to educating the public about the contributions made by our nation's First Ladies through guided tours, educational programs, an online resource, and a research library. In 1948, during Truman’s presidency, a balcony was added to the South Portico of the White House. At the time, it caused quite a controversy but President Truman insisted on it. Since then, members of the first family have enjoyed this outside sitting area adjacent to the second-floor Yellow Oval Study. Today it is referred to as the Truman Balcony. In 1949, a complete renovation of the White House was needed to preserve its historical significance.
