Built between 1738 and 1742, Drayton Hall is one of the finest examples of Georgian-Palladian architecture in America. The style is characterized by the use of bold geometric design and classical elements found in English and Italian country houses. Its signature feature is the two-story portico, believed to be the first in this country. Owned by the Drayton family through seven generations, this National Historic Landmark has remained in nearly original condition and is the only Ashley River plantation house to survive the Civil War intact. Its unique state of preservation and rich handcrafted detail offer visitors a rare glimpse of a bygone Southern way of life.

One of the more striking aspects of Drayton Hall is the wrought iron central gateway found at the ground level between the two main staircases. Known as the Harp Gate, Drayton family lore holds that local architect Albert Simmons added this basement gate on the land front side of the house in the late 19th century.

For many years, Low Country artist Marina Cantlon has been portraying the Gullah people of South Carolina and Georgia and their cultural heritage through her dolls, cards, and paintings. All of her characters are based on actual personas, and each has its own unique personality. In her Sweet Grass Baskets painting, these hand-woven containers are shown as working baskets, capable of carrying heavy loads. For three decades, The Posy Collection has been interpreting our major historical sites, prominent natural wonders, and selected graphic arts in cross stitch. This kit is a combination of their efforts aimed at "preserving our story in stitches."
Finished size 3¼" by 8" on 14-count Charles Craft fabric. Adapted with permission from the artwork of Marina Cantlon. Designed by Ceil Humphreys for The Posy Collection.
